Why Smartphone Photography Makes a Great Corporate Team Activity

Sep 24, 2026 | Photography Workshop

Before 2021, I had been teaching photography exclusively to aspiring professional photographers. Every time I was asked to teach a photography workshop it was from emerging photographers looking to level up to go pro.

But a shift happened around 2021. Phone cameras were becoming more sophisticated and photography was becoming more accessible to the everyday person. Slowly, businesses and corporate groups started requesting phone photography workshops.

I was already doing a lot more photography with my iPhone and so it felt natural (and exciting) to start teaching it to others.

It wasn’t long before I had designed a 2-part phone photography workshop and started delivering it. People loved it.

The Photography Skills I Teach

My workshops were teaching people how to notice good lighting that leads to more interesting photos.

How to compose images like the great photographers have always done.

How to tell a compelling story using only visuals.

How to transmit emotion and purpose in every photo.

But most importantly, how to take full advantage of all the advanced technical features of a phone camera! (there are lots, and many iPhone users underuse their phone cameras!)

I Believe Everyone Is Creative

When someone thinks they’re bad at photography, their capacity for imagination shrivels and dies. When you can’t see yourself taking good photos, your chances of actually improving your skills diminishes. This is what compels me to teach photography to people who think they’re not good, not creative or who have no idea how to use a camera.

I believe everyone is creative, even if they don’t feel like it.

The truth is: photography is becoming more and more accessible (thanks to mobile phones) and it’s becoming easier than ever to become better at taking photos.

The trick is turning on your imagination for good photography and learning how your phone can easily help you with that. It takes just a tiny ounce of curiosity and confidence in order to kick-start that learning.

With a good teacher who can show you the important basics of learning photography while also telling you which complicated parts you don’t need to learn, your ability to become a great photographer will grow.

When Things Click

My workshops are generally about 2 hours long, and I’m always amazed at how little time it takes before some participants have “lightbulb” moments. It doesn’t take much other than introducing them to the fundamentals of photography and showing them how to use a simplified camera (their phone!) in order to achieve it.

That’s when things click.

Suddenly they see how a boring, unremarkable photo can turn into a show-stopping image. Without fancy gear. Without years of intricate skills.

Photography is not a secret skill – it’s simpler than most people realize. And once you learn how to do it using your phone camera, it gets exciting. Those are my favourite parts of the workshop — seeing participants suddenly getting how their phone can take amazing photos.

Why Companies Book Photography Workshops

It’s been super rewarding watching teams experience my workshops. I love seeing when leaders value creativity and artistic exploration for their employees, even if it has nothing to do with their actual day-to-day job. I’ve seen large corporations and even small companies provide these photography learning sessions for their employees, and it always gets people so inspired and excited to learn a creative skill.

I see them engage their minds through artistic practices, slow down, become more observant, and more attuned to the visual environment around them. I give them exercises for expanding their curiosity and suddenly their focus shifts. It’s almost like a child-like wonder gets awakened in them.

Sometimes I get booked for these workshops so employees can become better content creators and can provide stronger images for their website and marketing materials. But more often than not, these workshops are booked so employees can get a fun mid-day break, explore a creative outlet and leave the workshop with a new, practical skill they can use in their personal lives.
